Hungarian Courses

The Hungarian Language Instruction Section is located within our Ugro-Finic language division (which also comprises, for example, Estonian).

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

We developed a computer-assisted language learning (CALL) program for Hungarian instruction that can be adapted to fit the individual needs of every student. This program serves as the basis of the instruction method. The extent of Hungarian knowledge of prospective student’s will be assessed and the student will be assigned to the appropriate level of the modified basic course. Different business language requirements can be pursued as independent study programs in parallel with the basic CALL study program.

Approaches to Teaching Hungarian for Beginners

A classical course was rewritten and adapted to CALL. To start with, students will be taught how to use the simple interactive computer programs. The next step will be learning Hungarian pronunciation and reading. These are radically different from English, thus we have an effective self check program whereby students will be capable of practicing their pronunciation while learning their vocabularies or reading their assignments and getting feedback while doing so from the computer. Studying will consist of a parallel course of short story reading, vocabulary development and essential grammar.  When the student’s mastery of the language reaches intermediary levels, the Hungarian internet and press become the student’s study resource materials.

Expert instructors will inter-phase with the student periodically to check verbal expression skills. Homework assignments will be e-mailed to the instructor for overview. Corrections will be electronically returned to the student with short explanatory notes. The entire course can also be taught at Dictyon headquarters.

Hungarian CALL Course Length

Depending on the level of knowledge the student is interested the course length can vary in length. For example, a beginner can undertake a 60, 120 or 180 hours long course and have 4 hours/week of effective lessons (equivalent to 20 weeks). A typical beginner to intermediary level CALL training course for students interested in understanding the language and speaking it will require from 360 to 720 hours (an extensive 3-6 months study period of 6 hours/day).
